I wanted to know what was the ruling on these various sects, Not currently but going back 300-1000 years

Ok...I know you asked Bro Salmany and I must admit he is more knowledgeable than me but let me give you a very brief overview.
- None of the four Imams said that any of the other was a deviant or a kafir.
- Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal did have some disagreements with the Usul of Imam Abu Hanifah e.g. he preferred to take a weak hadith above Qiyas (analogy).
- The great scholars of all four schools recognised the importance and validity of the other schools.
- Some of the scholars criticised in a scholarly manner the methodology of other scholars. No different to how some of your Ayatollah's disagree with each other.
- A handful of scholars went to extremities in criticising other scholars based usually on personal dislike or hatred (in some cases).
The Shia love to claim that Imam Shafii thought Imam Abu Hanifah was a kafir or that Imam Ahmad cursed Imam Malik etc. This is a blatant lie and fabrication (surprise, surprise!) and nothing of the kind has ever been reported from these ulema.

Salamu Alaikum
There has alway been a consensus after the formation of the Madhabs that all four are on Haq, and one can follow any one of the four he/she wishes to follow without condemnation.
Ofcourse you will find extremists within each Madhab whoa re extremely partisan. One such example is Imam Ghazalis teacher, Imam Al Haramayn who tossed out the window anything from the Hanafi Madhab and said such statements that cannot be reproduced here.
We also know that the Jarh of rivals based on allegiance to a specific group does not count. There have been various Malikis, Shafis, Hanbalis and Hanafis who have written about each other in a very praiseworthy way, this is the Jamhur.
As for the words ascribed to some of the Imams in books such as Tarikh Baghdad, then msot are lies and forgeries.
