Question

Assalam alaykum,

In praising Allah, Azzah Wa Jallah, Sayyadi Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, was reported saying:--

"Praise be to Him who granted His creatures access to the knowledge of Himself only through

their inability (ajz) to know Him."

Commenting on this, Imam al-Qushayri said: "Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, did not mean that Allah cannot be known. The inability to know Allah can only pertain to something that exists; it cannot apply to something that has no existence. Thus, for a paralysed person, sitting [qu'ud] is not possible; for it requires of him neither an assumption [of this state] , nor any action, because the state of sitting already resides in him.

Likewise, one who knows Allah [arif] is incapable of the act of knowing Allah, for this knowledge already resides in him, since, in his case, it is a necessity (daruriyya). At the beginning, knowledge of Allah, even if it is true, is acquired (kasbiyya). However, al-Saddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, counted it for nothing in regard to the necessary knowledge. For him, it was like a lamp at the rise of the sun, when its rays encompass it."
